  • Borders, time zones, capital markers, place search, sea names & everything on the detail maps

Admin 0 countries at 1:50m for the world map, with a lighter copy simplified to about 4 km for the zoomed-out views (de facto borders; a map index, not a political endorsement), with Crimea drawn as its own piece so it can follow the Settings choice. 1:10m time zones (standard UTC offsets; daylight saving not shown). 1:10m populated places (cities and the capital markers), rivers & lake centrelines, lakes, elevation points (peaks), airports and named physical regions (mountain ranges, plateaus, plains, deserts, islands, peninsulas) for the country maps, the maps of ranges, rivers and lakes, and the place search. 1:10m marine areas for the ocean and sea names on the world map, the sea maps and searching seas and oceans. Downloaded from the natural-earth-vector repository and simplified for the web. Public domain.

  • Terrain (elevation colours and hill shading) on the detail maps

Global elevation tiles (Terrarium encoding) from the AWS Open Data registry, fetched by your browser when a country, range, river, lake or sea map opens and turned into colour-by-height relief with hill shading. Compiled by Mapzen from SRTM, GMTED2010, ETOPO1, NED, Canadian CDEM, EU-DEM, Australia DEM and other public datasets; see the attribution list at github.com/tilezen/joerd.

  • Font for map labels (ocean and sea names)

Noto Sans Italic in MapLibre's glyph format, served from the Protomaps basemaps-assets repository on GitHub Pages. Noto Sans: SIL Open Font License.

  • Country names, codes, capitals, regions, languages, currencies

Common and official names, ISO 3166-1 codes (the key that joins every dataset), capitals, regions and subregions, languages, currencies, flag emoji, UN membership and independence. ODbL licence.

  • Statistics & graphs: population, GDP, area, fertility, life expectancy, age pyramid

Latest values on the country card (year shown beside each): population SP.POP.TOTL, GDP NY.GDP.MKTP.CD, GDP per capita NY.GDP.PCAP.CD, area AG.SRF.TOTL.K2, fertility SP.DYN.TFRT.IN, life expectancy SP.DYN.LE00.IN. Graphs: population and GDP (current US$, not inflation-adjusted) yearly since 1960; population pyramid from five-year age bands by sex (SP.POP.0004.MA.5Y … SP.POP.80UP.FE.5Y, scaled by SP.POP.TOTL.MA.IN and SP.POP.TOTL.FE.IN), which the World Bank takes from UN World Population Prospects. Also used for the population and GDP-per-capita map colours. CC BY 4.0. Refreshed weekly.

  • Religion map & religious beliefs graph

Share of each population that is Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, another religion (incl. folk religions) or religiously unaffiliated; the map colours each country by its largest group. Hackett, Stonawski, Tong, Kramer & Shi (2025), Pew Research Center, doi:10.58094/vhrw-k516; republished by Our World in Data under CC BY 4.0.

  • Climate map

0.5° map of Köppen–Geiger climate classes for 1991–2020, turned into shapes, trimmed to the 1:50m coastline and grouped into 11 climate regions (the exact Köppen code shows on hover). Beck, H. E. et al. High-resolution (1 km) Köppen-Geiger maps for 1901–2099 based on constrained CMIP6 projections. Scientific Data 10, 724 (2023). CC BY 4.0.

  • Overview & section text

Weekly snapshot of each country's article. The overview and section summaries are sentences selected from the article, not rewritten, so the narrative is Grokipedia's framing.

  • Flags

Flag images by ISO 3166-1 code; territories without an ISO code fall back to the flag emoji from mledoze/countries.

  • Currency conversions

Daily reference rates against the US dollar, cached for six hours. Indicative only; not for transactions.

  • Atlas's own lists & fallbacks
    Atlas editorial data (data/*.json, src/lib/recognition.ts, scripts/build-extras.ts)

Russia and Türkiye listed in both Europe and Asia; the Americas split into North America (incl. Central America and the Caribbean) and South America by subregion; the unrecognised-countries list, what each merges into, and the Crimea choice (display options, not a position); notes on disputed territories; Grokipedia page names where they differ from the country name; the largest religion for the few territories Pew doesn't cover (Pew categories); and small fixes to Natural Earth names (common English names such as the Apennines for “Appennino Ligure”, “Lake …” added to lake names, accents restored on river names).

  • Software (not data)

MapLibre GL JS draws the world map (BSD licence); Recharts draws the graphs (MIT); polygon-clipping merges and trims map shapes (MIT); geotiff.js (MIT) reads the climate data and d3-contour (ISC) turns it into smooth shapes, both only when the data is built.

Borders follow Natural Earth de facto outlines joined to ISO 3166-1. This is a map index, not a political endorsement. Numbers are World Bank (year shown) and a gazetteer snapshot. Flags are Flagcdn (Wikimedia Commons), not Grokipedia. Narrative is Grokipedia’s framing.
